Book Description

Glimpses of the WHALEMAN'S CABIN by G.W. Bronson Glimpses of the WHALEMAN'S CABIN by G.W. Bronson

First published in 1855, this was one of the rarest and hardest to find of the whaling narratives, until now.

This short yet far-ranging narrative chronicles the voyage of the bark Aerial under Captain Charles G. Pettey. The voyage, which originates from Mount Hope Bay, touches upon local New England places and people such as Bristol, New Bedford, and even Herman Melville (prior to the fame of his great book), before embarking to the far corners of the earth.

Starting in the North Atlantic, they voyage to the whaling grounds of the Azores, the Cape Verde Islands, Tristan de Acunha, and even include a visit to St. Helena to visit Napoleon's tomb.

Eventually, all ships must return to port, and while homeward bound they sailed the east coast of South America, the Lesser Antilles, St. Thomas and Puerto Rico, the whole time still in pursuit of their quarry; fin-back, sperm and right whales.

A fascinating look into the life of "those who go down to the sea in ships", this book will be a welcome addition to anyone interested by this great endeavor of the past.
