Book Description

We RemainedWe Remained. Three Years Behind The Enemy Lines in the Phillipines
by Russell W. Volckmann

Russell Volckmann commanded the Allied guerilla campaign on Luzon in the Philippines, operating out of the Cordillera in the northern part of the island. While Douglas MacArthur famously said "I shall return," Russell Volckmann wrote this book entitled: We Remained.

On the night before the infamous Bataan Death March started, Volckmann and several other soldiers slipped out under the wire and escaped into the Philippine jungle. And there they remained for the entire war, gone, but certainly not forgotten.

Russell W. Volckmann was a West Point graduate and a leader of guerilla resistance to the Japanese in the Philippines during World War II. After the fall of Bataan in 1942, he retreated into the hills and organized a resistance force among the Ilocanos. His force operated in the western and northern coasts of Luzon, launching attacks against the Japanese occupiers. During the U.S. invasion of the Philippines in January, 1945, Volckmann's guerrillas attacked the retreating Japanese forces far behind the lines, capturing bases and air fields, thereby allowing the American advance to proceed at a lightning pace. After the war, Col. Volckmann remained active in the U.S. Army, and played a major role in the establishment of the U.S. Army Special Forces, retiring with the rank of Brigadier General.
