Book Description

Pacific Commandos New Zealanders & Fijians in Action Pacific Commandos New Zealanders & Fijians in Action - A History of the Southern Independent Commando and First Commando Fiji Guerrillas by Colin R. Larsen

Out of print for over 60 years, Hailer Publishing is proud to reintroduce Pacific Commandos.

First formed in expectation of a Japanese invasion of Fiji, the unit was comprised of New Zealand Army officers and NCOs and local forces that planned on fighting a guerrilla war until a relieving force arrived. When the threat to Fiji subsided these experts in jungle warfare were sent forward into battle

Between December, 1942 and December, 1943, First Commando Fiji Guerrillas operated with American forces during the critical fighting for the Islands of the Solomon Islands group. Although the Commandos were a small fraction of the overall Allied forces on the islands, their contributions, especially in the area of intelligence, were out of proportion to their size. A tribute to their commitment is the fact that over 40% of the officers and a 1/3 of the NCOs were killed in action behind enemy lines. The unit continued to fight but was disbanded in May of 1944 because there were so few fit members left to serve.

Although a small unit, they were among the first to fight and helped to turn the tide, and their important part in history is one that needs to be remembered and preserved.
