Kuwait and Her Neighbors by H.R.P. Dickson
Originally published over 50 years ago, Kuwait and Her Neighbors is still considered to be one of the seminal works about this great nation. The author lived in Kuwait as a resident when the area was under British rule. His love for and interest in the people and their culture produce an intimate look into their lives in this book. His painstaking descriptions of tents, personal belongings and animal gear are of special interest, and help to bring this great culture to life. Dickson first came to the Middle East in 1920. Before settling in Kuwait he lived in Bahrain, Iran and Iraq, where he worked with such well-known Arabists as Sir Percy Cox, Gertrude Bell, Bertram Thomas and H. St. John Philby. In 1929, when Colonel Dickson was appointed Political Agent, he moved to Kuwait and set up housekeeping in a thick-walled, whitewashed, mud-brick house on the sea. Harold Dickson continued to live there until his death in 1959 and his wife Violet (MBE, CBE, DBE) a prolific writer as well, lived there until the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, when she was evacuated, unwillingly, to Britain, where she passed away at the age of 94. |
