The Blue and The Gray on the Nile by William B. Hesseltine & Hazel C. Wolf With the end of the Civil War, the United States ended up with the most modern army in the world, as well as many restless souls, both Blue and Gray, who chafed at the restrictions of civilian life. Enter the Khedive of Egypt, a leader who was seeking to modernize his army, who was ready to employ these men. Although not vocal in its support, the US Army supported these recruitment efforts and even went so far as to have General Sherman "release", some of his more promising young officers to assist with this mission. Along with these rising stars went a collection of soldiers of fortune, self described adventurers, and eccentrics who, for better or worse, were to become the first Americans many in the Arab world would meet. Although it has been over a hundred years since this effort took place, the significance of Americans assuming a modernizing role in the Muslim world is still with us today. |
